Kawau | Mike Crawford

I have been developing a series of 2-part sculptural vessels based on our native manu (birds) - the lid or 'head' sits seamlessly almost as if fused together, however it can be easily removed. This series makes reference to waka huia (treasure boxes) and Egyptian canopic jars, which were believed to contain the viscera of the soul. The kawau is a regular sight in the harbour of Ōtepoti (Dunedin) with its black plumage, blue highlights and regal stature.
