Di Tocker is a full-time Glass Artist working from her purpose built studio in Ohaupo, Waikato. Born in Auckland, 1971 and educated in Tauranga, Di was fortunate to discover her love of glass at the early age of 18. Since then Di has always created works in glass, firstly in leadlight as a hobbiest. This passion led Di to seeking work in the glass field, eventually becoming a designer consultant at a large leadlight manufacturer in Melbourne.
Di completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts (major Glass) in 2002 at RMIT University in Melbourne – this is where she discovered the method of Lost Wax Casting Glass and started to focus her work on the human form. Now most of Di’s work is focused on the human form, relationships and communication. The artist Di is most influenced by is Barbara Hepworth.
Di’s work has been selected for the prestigious Australasian Ranamok Glass Prize in 2011 and her work Stick to your Knitting won the Swarbrick Dixon award for Excellence in Glass at Re-Fraction Glass exhibition in 2010. In 2014, Di won first prize and people’s choice awards at Auckland’s Easter Show Art Exhibition for new works from her Rooms series.
Dividing her work hours between teaching cast glass workshops, regular commissions and continuing to develop her own work, Di says “It is a busy schedule, but I consider myself to be living the dream combining family life and my art practice”.
